Armenia has become a participant in the global biological program

An agreement on financial commitments was signed between the RA Science Committee and the International Barcode Life Consortium (IBOL) in February 2020 under the Memorandum of Understanding between the International Barcode Life Consortium and the RA Science Committee.
This document set out the commitments and commitments under the memorandum.IBOL aims to describe all living species on the planet by molecular markers (about 10 million species) and to include this data in the general directory. The story of the IBOL initiative dates back to 2003, when Paul Hebert and Mark Stoeckle in Canada proposed a completely new approach to the classification of living organisms based on their genome structure. Since 2004, $ 125 million has been spent under the IBOL project to describe 500,000 species.

2019 IBOL's new Bioscan program, launched in June, aims to describe the genomes of 2 million species of living organisms.  2019 Rouben  Aroutiounian, Academician-Secretary of the Department of Natural Sciences of the RA National Academy of Sciences, Head of the Department of Genetics and Cytology   was elected a member of the Scientific Committee of the Program at the founding meeting of the program held in Tronheim, Norway, on June 15-16.

The budget for the implementation of the IBOL project in 2019-2026 will be US $ 180 million. Participating in this global biology project with thousands of scientists from over 30 countries will enable Armenian biologists to conduct thousands of research at the molecular level as well as integrate them into scientific work of global importance.
