The major research fields are: Solid State Physics, optical properties of semiconductors, excitionic physics, physics of low dimensional semiconductors (nano-structures).

Head of the Chair of Solid State Physics, Prorector of Yerevan State University (1993-99), RA Minister of Education and Science (1999-2001), Academician Secretary of Physical-Mathematical and Technical Sciences Department NAS RA (2002-2004), Vice-president, Academician Secretary of NAS RA (2004-2006), Member of the Presidium of NAS RA (2000-2006, 2011-2021). Head of the Chair of General and Theoretical Physics at RAU (2006-2012), Director of the Institute of Mathematics and Computational Technologies (since 2012)

Laureate of Lenin YCU Award in the field of Science and Technology, medals after Kh.Abovyan and F. Nansen.
