Graduated from MSU (1965). Doctor of Phy. and Math. Science (1982), prof. (1983), acad. (1996).

Head of the Chair of Physics at Yerevan State Polytechnic Institute (1975-1984), Rector of Armenian State Pedagogical Institute after Kh.Abovyan (1987-88). Head of the Chair of Solid State Physics, Prorector of Yerevan State University (1993-99), RA Minister of Education and Science (1999-2001), Academician Secretary of Physical-Mathematical and Technical Sciences Department NAS RA (2002-2004), Vice-president, Academician Secretary of NAS RA (2004-2006), Member of the Presidium of NAS RA (2000-2006, 2011-2021).
